PORTO

Porto, also known as Invicta is one of the most visited cities in Europe. It is the town that gave the name to Portugal, in the Roman period (c. 200 BC) it was called Cale or Portus Cale. It played a key role in defending the ideals of liberalism in the 19th-century battles. It is known worldwide for its bridges and old and contemporary architecture, and for its historical centre, as well as for its wine and cuisine, with traditional dishes such as "Tripe with white beans" and the famous "Francesinha" (sandwich originally from Porto, made with bread, wet-cured ham, linguiça, fresh sausage like chipolata, steak or roast meat and covered with melted cheese and a hot thick tomato and beer sauce served with french fries. ). In Vila Nova de Gaia, on the opposite bank of the River, we find the port wine cellars, where you can get to know the history of the famous port wine and where you can taste the different varieties.

Avenue of the Allies pays homage to the Allied Countries of the First World War. It is an important Avenue located in downtown Porto being the main in town. It is the quintessential place where the people of Porto gather to celebrate special occasions and where is the Town Council building, the current localization of Town Hall.

The St. Bento Train Station, of French influence, is the ex-libris of the Portuguese railways serving the city of Porto. It is famous for it stunning tile panels depicting various stories of bygone days in the North of the country, being portrayed, among others, the Tournament of Arcos de Valdevez, D. João I and D. Filipa de Lencastre in Porto, in 1387, and the Conquest of Ceuta.

The Battle Square is situated in the city centre of Porto and tradition states that, in the 10th century, it was the scene of a bloody battle between the Saracens of Almancor and the inhabitants of Porto, which would end defeated, resulting in the razing of the city. It is one of the busiest points and visited by tourists visiting the city with proximity to Santa Catarina Street, the main commercial artery of downtown of Porto.

The Majestic Cafe, open since December 17, 1921, with the initial name of Elite, changed its name the following year to Majestic. This Café emanates an atmosphere of luxury, refinement and well-being. Up to this day it continues to be animated with poetry recitals, piano concerts, art exhibits, book launches and shots for national or foreign films.

The Cathedral situated in the historic centre of Porto is one of the leading and oldest monuments of Portugal. The beginning of its construction dated to the first half of the 12th century and lasted until the beginning of the 13th century. In the 17th century, the Main Chapel originally in Romanesque style was replaced by a larger one in the Baroque style, suffering many changes over the centuries.

In Ribeira, also known as the cube square, we highlight Fonte Taurina Street, one of the oldest of the city, the Wall of the Bacalhoeiros and the Prince´s House, where it's believed that Henry the Navigator was born, in 1394. Here we can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the Douro River, enjoy a typical meal or start a boat trip on the River, enjoy the beauty of the five bridges.

The primitive Church of St. Francis, in Porto, was initiated in 1223 and the current is the main temple in Gothic style in the city, whose construction began in the 14th century. It is one of the most important works of the Baroque, by its gilded interior. In its interior, we also highlight the tree of Jesse, as well as the Catacumbal Cemetery.

The Stock Exchange Palace or Palace of the Commercial Association of Porto began its construction in October 1842. With a mixture of architectural styles, the building features in its entire splendour the 19th-century neoclassical traits, Tuscan architecture, as well as the English Neopalladian influence. We can highlight in its interior the Palace of Nations, Arabian Room and the Library, as of particular interest.

The Clérigos Tower, a Baroque work by Nicolau Nasoni was built in the first half of the 18th century. The tower is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city of Porto. Built on one of the highest parts of the city and with a panoramic view of the same and the Douro River, which can be reached from the top of the Tower, is well worth the effort to climb the staircase of about 240 steps.

In the Port wine cellars, you will have the opportunity to get to know every step of the production process of this excellent wine produced exclusively from grapes from the Douro Demarcated Region. This natural and fortified wine despite being produced with grapes of the Douro Region and stored in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia became known as "Port Wine".

Connecting the city of Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia since the late nineteenth century, the D. Luis I Bridge is one of the ex-libris of Porto. Built in iron and with two decks, the work of the Belgian engineer Théophile Seyrig, a student of Gustave Eiffel, has replaced the old suspension bridge that existed in the same location. Currently, in the upper deck circulates the Porto Metro and in the lower deck the pedestrians and automobiles.

The mouth of the Douro River is where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is a tourist area, where you can enjoy the beauty of the river combined with a beautiful and romantic promenade. If we keep on the mouth towards Matosinhos, we can find the Castle of the Cheese, a strong mid-19th-century fort, which played an important role in the war of the restoration of the Portuguese independence.
