QUELUZ
In the city of Queluz, we highlight two extremely important monuments, the beautiful Palace of Queluz, often called the "Portuguese Versailles" and the D. Maria I Guesthouse, which once housed the Royal Guard of the King.
The Palace of Queluz with beautiful décor filled with pieces of enormous value, became the official royal residence, in particular, the Portuguese Prince Regent, the future D. João VI, as well as his family, to the Royal family's escape to Brazil because of the French invasions. In this Palace D. Pedro IV or D. Pedro I of Brazil was born. He also served as a discreet place of incarceration for Queen Maria I, "The Insane", while her madness continued to worsen after the death of D. Pedro.
MAFRA
In the town of Mafra, it is impossible to remain indifferent to the monumental Palace of Mafra ordered by King João V, in 1711. Also known for being a place of welcoming people, you will also find the famous Tapada de Mafra with an area of 1187 hectares and surrounded by a wall with an extension of 21 Miles. The Tapada has a great diversity of animal and plant species.
The Palace, in the centre of the village, is the most luxurious Baroque style Johannine national convent and also boasts, in addition to the Convent, a Basilica and the Royal Library. The library displays a precious collection of more than 40 000 books with bindings in gold, including the first edition of the “Lusíadas” by Luís de Camões. It also has a set of six organs, unique in the world for its size and beauty.
ERICEIRA
Ericeira is a very old village, with traces of the time of the Phoenicians, but it was only in the 19th century that this village grew, thanks to the commercial development of the existing port at this time. The departure into exile of the Portuguese royal family, an episode that marks the end of the national monarchy will forever make Ericeira port as one of the most iconic and dramatic places in our history.
