FÁTIMA

Fátima caught the media attention in 1917 with the first appearance of Our Lady of Fátima to three shepherd children, Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia, in Irene´s Cove where currently the Chapel of the Apparitions is located. The apparitions took place every 13th day from May until October. Our Lady showed them the secret of Fátima divided into three parts. First, is the vision of hell where sinners travelled without faith, second is the announcement of the beginning of a World War, the Second World War and the third secret revealed on May 13, 2000, by Pope John Paul II that consisted in the attempt on the life of the Pope himself.

The Sanctuary of Fátima is composed by the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Our Lady of Fátima Church and the Church of the Holy Trinity. It also comprises the Chapel of the Lausperene where the Holy Body of Christ in the Consecrated Host is permanently exposed and the Chapel of Reconciliation, dedicated to the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

BATALHA

The city of Batalha owes its origin to the building of the Monastery of St. Mary of the Victory. This construction resulted from the outcome of the Battle of Aljubarrota between the Portuguese army commanded by D. João I, Master of Avis and Nuno Álvares Pereira, against the Spanish army under the command of King John I of Castile. The battle took place on St. George's field, on the outskirts of the village of Aljubarrota, between the municipalities of Porto de Mós and Alcobaça. In thanks to the Virgin Mary for the victory over the Castilians, D. João I ordered the construction of the Monastery of St. Mary of the Victory.

The Dominican Monastery sent to build in honour of the Virgin Mary in 1386, by D. João I, is one of the most significant buildings of the Portuguese Gothic and Manueline style. In the Monastery of Batalha, you can find the most important nucleus of Portuguese medieval stained-glass windows, visible in the Main Chapel and the Chapter House. You can also observe the magnificent tomb of King John I and Filipa de Lencastre, between other tombs of the Portuguese Royal House as are the cases of the Infants Pedro or Henrique.

ALCOBAÇA

The city of Alcobaça is surrounded by hills. The settlement of Alcobaça dates back to Roman time, and its development has been found on the perimeter surrounding the Monastery of Alcobaça, around the 13th century. With the donation of the land by the King D. Afonso Henriques to the Cistercian order, the religious order that had a key role in the growth of Alcobaça, scoring presence there for 700 years. Currently, the urban centre is a matching set of streets and houses along the great monumental complex constituted by the Monastery and old dependencies.

The Monastery of Alcobaça started its construction in the 12th century by the Cistercian order, under the vote of donation made by D. Afonso Henriques. We can observe stained glass of unparalleled beauty in the first test of Gothic architecture in Portugal. In this monastery are buried D. Pedro and D. Inês de Castro, who lived a love story with a tragic end.

NAZARÉ

Nazaré, fishing village, had its origin in the cult around the Our Lady of Nazaré and is linked to the Legend of Nazaré. In our days, it is a much-appreciated place visited by 1,000,000 tourists every year and the beach, the local crafts, gastronomy and the cult of Our Lady of Nazaré are the main cores. More recently became known worldwide for its waves due to the phenomenon of a tidal wave with of around 30 meters, beating the world record for the biggest “surfing” wave.

The image of Our Lady of Nazaré breastfeeding the baby Jesus lays exposed in the sanctuary built in 1377. The sacristy, as well as, hallways and other rooms around the Main Chapel are decorated with Portuguese tiles from the early of 17th century. Along the ceiling, six large canvases are placed portraying the Passion of Christ. From here goes the iron staircase which leads pilgrims to the holy image of Our Lady of Nazaré.

ÓBIDOS

The village of Óbidos played an important role in the defensive pentagon of five castles of the kingdom centre, designed by the Templars. Also, was given as a wedding gift to Queen D. Isabel, by D. Dinis. His original layout suffered some major changes due to the 1755 earthquake. These days, we can lose ourselves in its narrow streets with whitewashed houses reminiscent of the Arab presence in Óbidos. The most emblematic sights are the Castle of Óbidos, the Parish Museum – Church of St. John the Baptist, the Portal of the Town of Óbidos and the Church of Mercy.

The Óbidos Castle was built on a small lot of 79 meters above sea level, mixing elements of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Baroque architecture. The Portal of the Town of Óbidos, built in the 17th century is garnished by 18th-century tiles, situated on the door and in the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, the patron saint of the village.
