AMARANTE

Amarante was born on the banks of the River Tamega, a city well known for the production of green wines, the region designated wine area of “Vinhos Verdes”. In the early 19th century, during the French invasions, the troops commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte tried to invade this region of Portugal, and the heroic episode of the defence of the Amarante Bridge that earned General Silveira the title of Count of Amarante.

Destiny of several pilgrimages, it results in the growth of the population. And it was during the 16th century that John III ordered the construction of the Monastery of St. Gonçalo on top of the chapel next to the bridge over the River Tâmega, where according to tradition, St. Gonçalo lived and was buried. We believe that this emblematic monastery is a monument to be visited.

RÉGUA

The town of Peso da Régua was born from the merger of the villages of Peso and Régua, stretching along the banks of the Douro. In the mid-18th century, the Marquis of Pombal created the Alto Douro Vineyards Company and from that time Régua began to grow and develop its wine production and marketing of wine, brand image of the city.

The Douro River, navigable from Porto to Régua, is widely known and used for regular cruises carrying curious to these natural landscapes. You will see some more of the history of Port Wine, Douro Doc wines and of the Douro Demarcated Region. You can end your visit with a visit and wine tasting on a farm in the region if desired.

PINHÃO

Pinhão, the region with the most diverse and famous Port wine-producing estate, situated on the right bank of the River Douro, where once everything destined to embarkation or disembarkation in Rabelo boats in the Douro River was stored, which drained the product through the river to Gaia.

Admire a wonderful view of the vineyard-covered slopes with a visit to the Pinhão historic railway station, one of the most emblematic of the Douro, which with its impressive 24 tile panels, portraits the reality of Douro landscapes and wine tradition.

VILA REAL

The King Dinis founded the city of Vila Real, which granted it the charter in 1289 and it was said that the King protected the village. Hence the derivation to Vila Real, situated on one of the slopes of the Marão Mountains and with evidence of having been inhabited since Palaeolithic times, also played an important role in the history of the country, being the birthplace of the Portuguese navigator Diogo Cão.

In Vila Real, we can find magnificent monuments and ancient buildings of noble origins, as the Mateus Palace, built in the 18th century, portrayed on the label of the famous wine Mateus rosé, the most emblematic of the rosé wines in Portugal. It is assumed that the author of the project of this Palace is the same that designed the Clérigos Tower in Porto, Nicolau Nasoni.
