Tour Lagos - Sagres

Tour Program

Exit towards Lagos to visit the Fort of Ponta da Bandeira, the Mother Church and the Municipal Museum Dr Formosinho with the option to visit a typical fishing boat, to the Grottoes of Ponta da Piedade. We suggest a stop for lunch in a typical restaurant overlooking the beach where you can enjoy fresh fish and seafood. Next, go to Sagres Fortress and the beautiful beaches ending the tour at Cape of St. Vincente.

LAGOS

Due to its coastal location and economic development, Lagos was the stage of the beginning of the Portuguese Discoveries, in the 15th century. Proudly bearing the statue of Henry the Navigator considered the "father" of the Discoveries and the monument in honour of Gil Eanes, son of Lagos and hero of the Discoveries. The city is also known for its beautiful white sand beaches, and Dona Ana Beach is the most famous and beautiful. The Lagos Marina, opened in 1994, is considered and distinguished as one of the best in Europe, attracting crews of various nationalities.

The Ponta da Bandeira Fort built in the 17th century as a fortress of defence to the access to the dock displays the quadrangular structure. The relatively low volumes and very thick walls in the sections facing the sea show a military architecture. The moat that surrounds the fortress is overtaken by a drawbridge, and inside there is a small 17th century tile-lined Chapel. Currently, there is a small museum inside evocative of the Discoveries.

The Ponta da Piedade Grottoes are accessible only by sea and with unmatched beauty are composed of fascinating natural rock formations that the Atlantic Ocean has carved through the sea and wind. These limestone rock formations of the cliff-type up to 20 meters high are the main tourist destination in the region.

SAGRES

Sagres displays, due to its geographical location and the magnificent cliffs, some of the most impressive natural landscapes of the Algarve. The beautiful cliffs and the long stretches of sand on the coast north of Cape St. Vincent make it a location of choice for surfers, paragliding enthusiasts and lovers of natural and wild environments. We highlight the beautiful beaches of Tonel and Martinhal. The Fortress of Sagres and Cape St. Vincent complete the historical part of this village.

The Fortress of Sagres is an imposing fortification built in the mid-15th century by the Henry, the Navigator. The building is the human extension of the natural rock and was for centuries the main centre of a maritime defence system. It is a mythical and magical place in the history of the Portuguese discoveries. Outside the fortress, there are the Compass-Rose, a circle of 43 meters in diameter and 32 spokes made of stones and which some scholars believe to have been a sundial.

The beaches, such as the Tonel, helped transform Sagres in the surf`s capital in the Algarve's, while the sheltered beaches as the Mareta or Martinhal, are favourites among the families because they continue to retain their natural environment. The Martinhal Beach contains traces of a large ceramic centre with three furnaces used for the production of amphorae and on small islands in front remains of salting fish tanks can also be found.

At Cape St. Vincent, the most south-west point of Europe we arrive at the Fortress, building from the 16th century, which had as its aim the protection of pirate attacks in the Franciscan convent adjacent to the fortress. The Lighthouse of Cape St Vincent built in 1846 has been regularly extended and modernised since. It is considered one of the most powerful lighthouses in Europe and watches one of the world's busiest trade routes.
