Exit towards the city of Fátima, where we will visit the Shrine of Fátima, the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Chapel of the Apparitions, ending our visit at the Little Shepherds`House in Valinhos.
FÁTIMA
Fátima caught the media attention in 1917 with the first appearance of Our Lady of Fátima to three shepherd children, Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia, in Irene´s Cove where currently the Chapel of the Apparitions is located. The apparitions took place every 13th day from May until October. Our Lady showed them the secret of Fátima divided into three parts. First, is the vision of hell where sinners travelled without faith, second is the announcement of the beginning of a World War, the Second World War and the third secret revealed on May 13, 2000, by Pope John Paul II that consisted in the attempt on the life of the Pope himself.
The Sanctuary of Fátima is composed by the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Our Lady of Fátima Church and the Church of the Holy Trinity. It also comprises the Chapel of the Lausperene where the Holy Body of Christ in the Consecrated Host is permanently exposed and the Chapel of Reconciliation, dedicated to the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
The construction of the Chapel of the Apparitions began in 1919. The pedestal, with the image of Our Lady, marks the exact spot on which Our Lady appeared to the shepherds on May 13 in the little holm oak.
The Church of the Holy Trinity opened on 12 October 2007 and is the fourth largest Catholic Temple in the world with more capacity. It features a circular shape on the outside and inside features a square shape, with 12 side doors, one dedicated to each of the Apostles and a large central door, the Door of Christ.
The Shepherds' House is located in Valinhos, three miles from the Sanctuary, and was the site of the fourth apparition of Our Lady, on 19 August 1917. You can visit the houses and their interiors, especially Sister Lucia's House where you can observe the shepherds' pit located in the yard of this residence. This is where the "Angel of Peace" appeared for the second time in the summer of 1916.
