Tour Óbidos - Nazaré

Tour Program

Exit towards the medieval town of Óbidos, where we will visit the Castle of Óbidos and taste a drink typical of the area, the famous "Ginjinha" de Óbidos, served in a chocolate Cup. Towards Nazaré, fishing village, where we suggest you stop for lunch to try the fresh fish while admiring a wonderful view over the sea, visiting the Sanctuary and the Chapel of the Memory.

ÓBIDOS

The village of Óbidos played an important role in the defensive pentagon of five castles of the kingdom centre, designed by the Templars. Also, was given as a wedding gift to Queen D. Isabel, by D. Dinis. His original layout suffered some major changes due to the 1755 earthquake. These days, we can lose ourselves in its narrow streets with whitewashed houses reminiscent of the Arab presence in Óbidos. The most emblematic sights are the Castle of Óbidos, the Parish Museum – Church of St. John the Baptist, the Portal of the Town of Óbidos and the Church of Mercy.

The Óbidos Castle was built on a small lot of 79 meters above sea level, mixing elements of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Baroque architecture. The Portal of the Town of Óbidos, built in the 17th century is garnished by 18th-century tiles, situated on the door and in the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, the patron saint of the village.

NAZARÉ

Nazaré, fishing village, had its origin in the cult around the Our Lady of Nazaré and is linked to the Legend of Nazaré. In our days, it is a much-appreciated place visited by 1,000,000 tourists every year and the beach, the local crafts, gastronomy and the cult of Our Lady of Nazaré are the main cores. More recently became known worldwide for its waves due to the phenomenon of a tidal wave with of around 30 meters, beating the world record for the biggest “surfing” wave.

The image of Our Lady of Nazaré breastfeeding the baby Jesus lays exposed in the sanctuary built in 1377. The sacristy, as well as, hallways and other rooms around the Main Chapel are decorated with Portuguese tiles from the early of 17th century. Along the ceiling, six large canvases are placed portraying the Passion of Christ. From here goes the iron staircase which leads pilgrims to the holy image of Our Lady of Nazaré.
